1. After Brain Injury: Telling Your Story
Whether a brain injury is the result of an accident, surgery, military service, violence, infection, medical emergency, or any other cause, survivors must now deal with a number of unexpected and unimagined challenges. They have a new story to tell, and this casual, friendly workshop helps them discover it with simple journal exercises. We use the first journal workbook for survivors of brain injury, After Brain Injury: Telling Your Story, which I co-wrote with Susan B. Schuster, M.A., CCC-SLP.

I created this workshop for survivors of brain injury in 2006, three years after my husband sustained such an injury, and have since facilitated it twice a year in Tucson. This workshop typically runs in weekly 90-minute sessions over six weeks, but it can be easily  adapted to other formats and locations. The major requirement is being able to write or use one’s laptop.

2. Care for Yourself While Caregiving
This journaling workshop is designed to offer spouses/partners and parents of people with brain injury a double opportunity: journaling in a casual, non-judgmental atmosphere about caring for themselves while providing care for another, and the companionship with others in similar situations. This workshop is valuable for spouses/partners and parents even when direct caregiving has lessened or ended; many issues related to a loved one’s brain injury can linger. (I am the wife of a survivor of traumatic brain injury.) This workshop uses the Journal to the Self® format.

3. Journal to the Self®
I am a member of the international community of certified instructors of JOURNAL TO THE SELF®. We are passionate about the power of personal writing to enhance the well-being of the whole person: body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

I would love to guide you through a JOURNAL TO THE SELF® workshop, which offers 18 simple techniques you can use anytime to enhance and deepen your journal writing. These workshops can be customized and adapted as needed to a variety of audiences. Never journaled before? Never fear! JOURNAL TO THE SELF® is perfect for beginning and experienced journalers alike.

Some of the JOURNAL TO THE SELF® workshops I can offer:

• Give Yourself a Voice - By giving yourself a voice on the page, you can discover the mysterious, magical parts of yourself and explore your creativity. You can learn how to build bridges to a better-balanced life and create a springboard to the future. You can also become your own compassionate listener as you learn to “hear” the stirrings of your heart and spirit, which are often buried beneath the clamor of the mind. An excellent workshop for anyone, including those who write for publication and those who want to.

• Feeling Stuck? Free Yourself! - Feel as if your feet are stuck in cement? Feel as if you can’t move an inch? If you’re looking for some new ways of thinking about work, leisure, health and aging, finances, or any other part of your life, start chipping your way inch by inch toward freedom with this workshop.

• Love Yourself Through Grief - The death of someone we love is one of life’s most devastating experiences. How do we cope with the loss and the huge hole a death can leave in our lives? How do we care for ourselves as we care for others who are also grieving and who depend on us? What do we do when the grief doesn’t seem to end? We can pick up a pen, begin to write, and in the process, learn to love ourselves through grief.
